Project Overview

The overall objective of the PhosFarm project is to develop a technology for the efficient recovery of phosphorus from agricultural residues, including a novel enzymatic process for the mineralisation of the organic phosphorus compounds into phosphates, which can be easily recovered by precipitation. In this way, the total phosphorus recovery will be increased by 30 to 80%. The result will be a semi-mobile on-site or a mobile trailer-mounted unit that can be operated stand-alone or easily integrated into already existing manure facilities or anaerobic digesters. The proposed innovative process will help the consortium to penetrate the agricultural and farm business market by enabling:

  • Offering the customer the service of regular treatment of residues free of charge in various contract models including self-operation (stationary systems belonging to large farmers), on-site with semi-mobile units or as mobile service business (moving from location to location with a fleet of units).
  • Providing tailor-made plant-improving and soil-conditioning products from sustainable and renewable sources.
  • Moving into the knowledge-based economy through IPR ownership, creating opportunities as an international licensor of technology on a franchise basis rather than solely functioning as a supplier of technology.
  • Demonstrating the automated nature of our PhosFarm process. This is of benefit to franchise partners as it can treat farm residues 24 hours a day without the need for the constant presence of operators.
